App Nap is an energy feature introduced to the Mac in OS X Mavericks (10.9) that causes inactive applications to go into a paused state, helping to reduce power usage. The feature can help to prolong battery life for laptops but can cause issues with Connected as it effectively puts the application to sleep and drops the network connection. There, 'App Nap' should always be disabled for Connected.
App Nap helps you save power and battery life when you’re working with multiple apps at the same time. You can disable this feature for each application by using the info window in the Finder (select the app in Finder and activate this window with cmd⌘ + i). With the following command you can disable App Nap system wide.
- Apr 14, 2014 Head into the Finder and find the app you want to disable App Nap for. Right click on the app (or Control-click) to bring up the contextual menu, and choose Get Info.
- May 25, 2019 App Nap is a new power saving feature in Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks. When an application is completely hidden behind other windows and is not currently executing a task like playing music or checking for e-mail, Mavericks will deem that app “inactive” and put it to sleep to save power and free up your computer’s resources.
- Selectively Disable App Nap For Mac Applications. Note: You must re-launch active applications for the toggled App Nap setting to take effect, whether you are disabling it or re-enabling it. This process must be repeated for each application that you wish to prevent App Nap for. Quit the application you wish to disable App Nap for.
- However it evolved, Mac OS X now has what’s called Power Nap, a feature where even though your MacBook Air, iMac or other Apple computer is ostensibly asleep, it still wakes up sporadically to run administrative tasks including, yes, checking for new email. Can be very weird if you’re not used to it, but it’s easy to disable if you want.
To disable App Nap:
1) Make sure the Connected application is closed.
2) Locate the Connected application in your Applications folder and highlight it with a single click so it is selected.
3) Go to the “File” menu and select “Get Info” (or select the app and hit Command+I)
4) Check the box for “Prevent App Nap”, found under the General section of Get Info screen, as shown in the following screen.
5) Close out of Get Info and relaunch the app in question

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Disable App Nap Completely in Mac OS X.
App Nap is an energy feature introduced on the Mac in OS X Mavericks that causes inactive applications to go into a paused state, which helps reduce power consumption. The feature can help extend the battery life of the MacBook line, and it can also affect the overall power consumption of the computer. While App Nap has its advantages, some advanced users may find it a nuisance in some situations, so disabling the App Nap functionality may be desirable. We’ll show you how to quickly disable the App Nap feature everywhere in OS X in one fell swoop, without having to disable it on an individual app basis.
To be clear, this will disable the App Nap feature full and system-wide, meaning for every application and process that will run on the Mac. Essentially, this returns the app behavior to what it used to be as pre-Mavericks, where inactive idle apps don’t go into sleep pause. If you’d rather just turn it off for a single app, use this to accomplish that.

Disabling this can affect any task, process or application running in the background of OS X:
- Open the Terminal app, located in the / Applications / Utilities / folder
- Copy and paste the following standard string into the terminal and hit the Return key:
- Exit Terminal and restart apps and / or processes for the change to take effect
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSAppSleepDisabled -bool YES
As with other standard command strings, there is no confirmation. For the changes to take effect, you must restart all running apps. You can do that yourself by stopping and reopening things, or by using our DIY Quit All Apps tool created by Automator to quickly get to work on this process. Restarting the Mac also works fine, so if you are late for a system update or reboot anyway, this could be a good opportunity.
Once apps have restarted or the Mac has restarted, you can confirm that App Nap is not working by running some processes in the background or hiding inactive applications for about 30 minutes and then checking the “Power” panel in Activity Monitor. Look under the “App Nap” sort section and everything will show as “No”, including the app that was in the background.
This is a really advanced setting to disable and most users should leave it on feature enabled, particularly as it benefits those concerned about energy consumption or maintaining the longest possible battery life.
Re-enable App Nap in Mac OS X.
Decided you’d rather leave App Nap on so OS X can manage application and process energy usage? You can easily reverse course and re-enable the App Nap feature all over OS X by changing the default string a bit, here’s how:
Disable App Nap Mac Free
- In the Terminal app, use the following command string and hit return:
- Exit and restart all apps, or restart the Mac to restore the default setting
defaults remove NSGlobalDomain NSAppSleepDisabled
Again, there is no confirmation, but App Nap will function as intended again. This feature requires OS X 10.9 or later to run.
Heads up to a MacWorld reader for discovering the defaults command, you will notice that it is basically the same defaults string as the one to disable App Nap for a specific app, except that “NSGlobalDomain” is used instead of a application name. Excellent find!
